As part of its role in creating and implementing an integrated planning process to manage Georgia Institute of Technology's preparations to serve as the site of the 1996 Olympic Village, Draper & Associates provided scheduling and project control services for the Eighth Street Student Apartments constructed on the campus. This project included three five-story building with a total of 235,000 SF built to house approximately 650 students in 166 apartment units.
The structures contain post-tensioned concrete frames, masonry and precast exteriors, and slate roofs. Each apartment and student bedroom was wired to fully utilize the full spectrum of electronic technology - voice and data lines as well as cable television.
Because the project had to be completed in time to house Olympic athletes, Draper & Associates implemented strict project controls and developed an aggressive construction schedule. As a result, this $21.5 million project was completed in only 16 months. The project included a central energy plant to serve a number of west campus buildings.
