Baptist Medical Center , the newest facility for the Georgia Baptist Healthcare System, was built to accommodate 41 beds with the infrastructure in place to accommodate an expansion to 150 beds and the addition of as many as five stories. Built on deep foundations, the structure can support such additions. The present structural steel frame building consists of three floors. Because of hopes of future expansion, structural steel columns were stubbed through the roof level to accommodate any vertical expansion.

The scope of work consisted of construction of 94,020 square feet, including emergency room, exam rooms, diagnostic imaging and respiratory therapy, pharmacy, laboratory, surgery, food service and material management areas, intensive care unit and patient rooms.

The Project Team overcame several challenges during the construction of the facility, specifically conquering weather issues. The project sits on an 85-acre site where the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers found jurisdictional wetlands. About 40 of these acres were disturbed during the development of the site, which led to a possible erosion problem, prompting the Project Team to work with local officials and residents in the area to eliminate or resolve problems - such as erosion and silt control. A medical office building is adjacent to the hospital facility, while other medical office buildings are planned for the future.

Draper & Associates provided both construction schedule development and construction monitoring services during all phases of the project. A Draper consultant conducted bi-weekly project coordination meetings with the owner, the general contractor, principal subcontractors, and all involved parties. During these meetings, progress was measured and correlated to the Overall Project Schedule, action items were identified with responsibility for completion and commitments to completion dates, and detailed near-term schedules were developed to ensure timely accomplishment of Overall Project Schedule target dates. Updated schedules and Progress Reports were compiled and promptly distributed to all project participants.
