Adjacent to the Universal Studios Theme Parks in Orlando , FL , the Portofino Bay Hotel is a luxury resort hotel modeled after the romantic Mediterranean seaside village of Portofino , Italy . Built on fifty-five acres, the hotel boasts 850 guest rooms including luxurious presidential and harbor view suites. The hotel also provides convention and event facilities including exquisite main and junior ballrooms, multiple meeting and function rooms, four restaurants, three lounges, a child care facility, and a physical fitness center. Site amenities include two swimming pools complete with bathhouses, snack bars and cabanas, a boccia ball court, function lawns and courts, and a playground. Landscaping , rockwork, and hardscapes compliment the harbor and other site finishes. This fast-track project was built in only 19 months and finished on schedule.
The Portofino Bay Hotel project was unique in a number of ways. The project is centered around a 15-acre manmade harbor which also connects via canal to the adjacent theme park. The site features provisions that allow hotel guests to enjoy gondola service to and from the theme park. Variations in the exterior building elevations coupled with theme painting give the five main buildings the visual appearance of multiple smaller structures placed side by side. Another unique feature of the project is its many "street scenes" used in the main building retail and dining areas which create a Mediterranean village setting.
Utilizing Primavera software, DRAPER & ASSOCIATES developed and updated the Overall Project Schedule. Draper Consultants also facilitated bi-weekly job coordination meetings and prepared detailed six-week look-ahead schedules representative of the agreed-upon short term plan. The OPS contained numerous owner-furnished items which required careful delivery coordination since many products and materials were imported. Draper's involvement began with the development of the initial OPS and carried through the final activities of this complex project. At the request of the owner, Draper & Associates' services were employed full-time over the final four months of construction to assure timely completion.
